Imphal, January 23 2024:
Locals of Phayeng Ching Khunou erupted in protest against a Government decision to withdraw State forces from the vulnerable area for deployment in Imphal for Republic Day.
Phayeng Ching Khunou and other villages in the outskirts of Imphal West have come under several attacks from Kuki militants in the past.
The decision to withdraw the troops for Republic Day in Imphal may put the villagers at risk, said the protesters today.
Security measures for RD shouldn't be a priority that precedes the security of the people.
Celebrating the Republic Day when the Government can't even protect its people is pointless, they said.
Speaking to media persons, Angom Noren, advisor of the Phayeng Ching Khunou Cultural and Development Club stated that two vehicles were sent to the village to withdraw State security personnel.
"The move to withdraw the State forces from our village is very unfortunate.
It is saddening and appalling that the State Government has failed to grasp the situation in the area and consider the plight of the villagers," Noren said.
He said Kuki militants' attacks in the past had killed one villager.
A heated argument broke out between the personnel who came to pick up the State police personnel from the village.
The villagers gathered and prevented the withdrawal of the personnel.
Later, some other vehicles came to the village again to pick up the personnel.
However, the vehicles were forced to return empty.
