Imphal, January 23 2024:
In light of the ongoing conflict that has ravaged Manipur for more than eight months, many organisations have decided to sidestep the Republic Day celebration this year.
In a statement, Co-ordinating Committee of Clubs & Organisation (COCOCO) has asserted that Republic Day celebration makes no sense when there is no set definition of "freedom" .
Continuing in this line of thought, COCOCO has questioned if there is truth in the Indian democracy or if it has brought about an equitable society.
Further, it asked if the Prime Minister's silence over the plight of thousands of displaced people in the State is a display of the mighty Indian democracy.
Accusing the Central Government of having a hand in the unfolding conflict, COCOCO added that the people are well aware of this.
In addition, COCOCO pointed out the looming question that everybody wants an answer to, i.e, who is responsible for the largescale violence inflicted on innocent civilians? .
COCOCO also laid blame on the State Government's insincerity for letting the situation deteriorate to this extent.
"There is no reason to celebrate Republic Day", it concluded.
Likewise, the Disabled Development Association Manipur (DDAM) and Wheelchair Basketball Association Manipur (WBAM) have resolved to steer clear of Republic Day celebration 2024 .
A statement issued by Md Yunus Khan, general secretary, DDAM & WBAM has asserted that DDAM and WBAM have always believed that disabled people have their own rights and are capable of partaking in any activity.
However under the current circumstances where Manipur is witnessing continued violence and turmoil, DDAM and WBAM have resolved to forgo the Republic Day celebration, said the statement.
DDAM & WBAM have also appealed to the public to support their decision.
Similarly Students' Union (2022-23) Liberal College Luwangsangbam, Imphal has also resolved to refrain from participating in the Republic Day celebration 2024 .
This move comes in strong condemnation of the Central Government's failure to contain the almost 9 month old conflict as well as the alleged atrocities meted out to Meiteis by Central Armed Forces, said a statement issued by Liberal College Students' Union.
LCSU has also urged the State and Central Government to bring about the proper resolution of the protracted conflict.
