Ukhrul, July 31 2023:
The traditional lighting programme 'Meila' marked the end of the 3-day long Mangkhap Festival (a post plantation festival) yesterday.
The villagers of Ngainga observed the traditional lighting programme across the village.
The 3-day long celebration began on July 28 with merriment along with sumptuous food to make up for the hard work and efforts put in the tilling and transplantation of rice saplings in their paddy fields.
The Headman of Ngaina village, Khangamkhai R Shimray led the traditional lighting programme in the presence of village leaders at Ngainga church.
Speaking at the occasion, he said 'Mangkhap' is celebrated to mark the end of annual rice transplantation activities in the paddy fields.

However, this year, due to deficient rainfall and scarcity of water sources in Ukhrul district, the celebration of Mangkhap festival has been deferred which is usually celebrated in the first week of July, he said.
'Mangkhap Phanit is celebrated to invoke the blessing of our creator to safeguard our transplanted rice in the paddy field for a bountiful harvest', he added.
He also mentioned that the traditional lighting ritual 'Meila' is held on the last day of the festival to preserve the good old practice of pleasing God.
The Headman further stated that the change in rainfall pattern has directly affected the local farmers where they are unable to take up any plantation activities due to scarcity of water.
It may be noted that once the month of July passes, rice plants cannot grow till maturity to bear seeds.
In view of the suffering faced by the farmers, the Headman assured to extend best possible help to the affected farmers.
