Saikhom Mirabai Chanu who opened the medal account for India at the Tokyo Olympics has categorically stated that due support of the family and appreciating the guidance of teachers/coaches are the key to succeed in any field.
Addressing a felicitation ceremony organised by Manipur Weightlifting Association (MWA) at Khuman Lampak, Mirabai expressed desire for more women athletes of the State to engage in weightlifting sports.
Saying that she will leave Imphal on August 10 to prepare for other upcoming competitions, Mirabai stated that she will strive to bring more laurels for the State and Nation as a whole.
Mirabai also said that she is ready to impart suggestions to budding weightlifters of the State.
The ceremony was attended by MWA working president, M Lokendro and secretary Sunil Elangbam among others.
On the occasion, Sunil said that State has so far produced 4 Olympic weightlifters till date - Th Sanamacha Chanu (2000 and 2004 Olympics); N Kunjarani (2000 Olympics); Ng Soniya Chanu (2012 Olympics) and S Mirabai (2016 and 2021 Olympics) .
Maintaining that many more youths are taking interest in weightlifting today, Sunil said that the contribution of coaches in popularising this sport is immense.
Sunil Elangbam encouraged Mirabai to focus on the next Olympic, which is due in 2024 at Paris.
At the event, Dhyan Chand awardee N Anita Chanu; S Brojen and Kh Ranjan who trained Mirabai and the parents of the Olympic silver medallist were given a shawl each as a token of appreciation.
