DESAM to ban plastics

Observing that different types of plastics being used in the State poses a threat not only to human health but also to the environment, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) declared that it would start banning plastic items procured from outside mainly from Myanmar .
In a press release, DESAM urged the State Government to come up with steps to introduce biodegradable plastics which are not harmful to health .
It also asked plastic dealers in the State to end using and selling the existing conventional plastics within a month .
DESAM hailed the recent order issued by the Deputy Secretary, Forest & Environment banning the use of plastic carry bags of less than 50 microns in thickness.
According to the order, anybody found dealing in or using such polybags/plastic carry bags shall be liable to be punished under Section 15 of the Environment (Protection)
Act, 1966 .
