Seminar on economic development held

A one day seminar on Lamdamsigi Senmitlon Phagatnaba Amasung Nupigi Thoudang organised by the Women Association for Socio-Economic Development (WASEDEV) and Iramdam Kanba Apunba Lup (IKAL) was held today at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul, Imphal.
Among the resource persons of the seminar were president of All Manipur Working Journalist Union (AMWJU) Wangkhemcha Shamjai, research scholar, Centre for Manipur Studies, Manipur University Ksh (O) Momota and Dr N Ram, Professor of Agricultural Economics, Central Agricultural University (CAU).
Former Prof of Economics, Manipur University N Mohendro was the moderator.
In the technical session, resource persons spoke on the role played by women in the society and their contribution in the State's economy and steps which need to be taken up to empower women.

Suggestions were also made by the resource persons to improve the economy by encouraging production of high-value crops and handicraft products.
After an interaction session with the delegates, various recommendations were adopted.
Pressuring the State Government to frame an economic policy specially tailored and designed to bring up and guide women to play a pivotal role in developing the economy of the State was among the recommendations made by the organizers and resource persons.
Other recommendations made in the seminar include; mass awareness campaign to encourage women to take active roles in decision making and in developing the economy.
The State Government must enact an 'Act' to provide extra political, social and cultural empowerment for the betterment of women in the society.
It also recommended that the State Govt encourages traditional hand-loom and handicraft artisans.
