Imphal, February 16 2016:
A water supply scheme at Awang Sekmai which was constructed by NLCPR at the cost of Rs 700 lakh in 2005 is still lying idle.
Social worker Khairakpam Robin said that the water supply scheme was constructed under the PHED with an aim to end the probelm of water shortage in the area.
Though the construction work has completed in 2015, it is yet to quench the thirst of villagers of Awang Sekmai and Kanglatongbi who have been facing severe shortage of potable water.
The villagers have earlier relied on well water for everyday uses.
However, all the wells have dried up after the January 4 earthquake.
Therefore, the villagers have been purchasing drinking water at the cost of Rs 250-300 per thousand litre, stated Robin.
Road connecting Awang Sekmai and Lamsang is also in deplorable condition.
The authority concerned has placed crushed stones along the roadside in order to repair the connecting road causing great difficulty for the people to commute.
He urged the contractors concerned to expedite the construction work at the earliest so as to provide better road connectivity.
Robin also stated that the locals would resort to road blockade and prohibit the contractors from entering the area in case the work is not initiated soon.
