Imphal, August 04 2014:
Manipur University Tribal Students Union (MUTSU) demanded compliance with Central Educational Institution (Reservation in Admission) Ammendment Act 2012 in the admission process of academic session 2014-15 in the varsity.
Speaking to reporters at Manipur Press Club, MUTSU president Lh Seitinthang said that 31 percent of the total seats must be reserved for ST students under the Ammendment Act.
He also cautioned the MU authority that admission process must not be delayed by postponing entrance tests.
Informing that entrance test for Biotechnology Department was deferred today due to a furore from SC and OBC students, Lh Seitinthang expressed concern that their effort to contact MU authority on postponement of entrance test for other departments was not responded positively.
He said that the Ammendment Act mentioned about 31 percent seat reservation for ST students in Central Universities located in tribal resided areas of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and Assam in accordance with the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
After the University authority had announced the Ammendment Act would be complied with by the varsity, admission process was delayed due to a furore from some sections of students, he added.
Regarding Joint Students Co-ordinating Committee's statement on Sixth Schedule, Lh Seitinthang clarified that the points mentioned by the committee were relevant to Assam State.
MUTSU would announce future course of action in association with ATSUM, KSO and ANSAM soon if the MU authority fails to listen the demand of MUTSU.
Members of KSO General Headquarters and students of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Regional Canpus Manipur were also present at the press conference.
