Imphal, February 10 2021:
The Committee on Protection and Preservation of Historical Sites has suggested that a decision to protect the sacred sites of 'Koubru' and 'Thangjing' should be taken at the ongoing session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Speaking to reporters aty Manipur Press Club today, Sapamcha Jadumani, spokesperson of the committee said the committee is formed jointly by Federation of Haomee and Joint Committee on Protection of Ibudhou Thangjing.
He added both the sacred sites of Thangjing and Koubru are inextricably linked to the history and culture of Manipur.
Both the sites have 13 sacred sites each to which the people of Manipur on various occasions pray.
Due to the significance of these two sites, the Government of Manipur had announced the protection and preservation of these sites under the Historical Monument Act, which included 4 hectare in Thangjing and 4.2 hectare in Koubru range.
The committee had a meeting with the Chief Minister and expressed concern that the areas announced by the Government was not enough to cover the 13 sites each at both the sacred sites.
There are also reports that some encroachers have built fences and constructed houses in these ranges, reports of poppy plantations are also there and there are even reports that these ranges have become hide-outs of insurgents groups currently under SoO pact with the Government, added Sapamcha Jadumani.
He added that the Government should take these sites under State protection to preserve and protect both the hill ranges.
