Imphal, February 01, 2011:
Along with paying befitting tributes and recalling her contributions to the Manipuri society, the 7th death anniversary of Meira Paibi leader Ema Kombi was observed at GM Hall here today.
Organised under the aegis of Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba, Manipur (PLMPAM), the observance function was attended by a large number of people and dignitaries who paid floral tributes to the photograph of Ema Kombi.
In the key note address of the observance function, PLMPAM vice president RK Leibaktombi recalled the contributions made by Ema Kombi in the society and said that she was always at the forefront fighting against arbitrary killings, torturing and sexual harassments and other crimes that took place in the State.
She recalled incidents like the Army operation at Loktak from March 10 to 15 in 1999 in which 11 villagers including women were injured, the Tonsen Lamkhai killing, Malom massacre, etc, in which Ema Kombi took an important role in fighting for justice.
Taking inspiration from Ema Kombi, Meira Paibis in Manipur need to join hands and work together for the cause of social justice and bring about peace and development in the State, she exhorted the gathering.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, Thounaojam Iboyaima observed Ema Kombi was the living example of the fact that one does not to be necessarily educated to take part in the fight for social justice and lead the people.
Like most Meira Paibis, Ema Kombi too was uneducated and she can not even sign.
Yet she fought against the atrocities committed by security forces and earned respect and honour.
She become a mother to all the people, Iboyaima said.
If there have no Meira Paibis, Manipur would have been land of windows.
So, we should be proud of the Meira Paibis who hold up their torch high at night touring the locality to protect the people and prevent crimes, he added.
PLMPAM president Memchoubi and AMUCO president KT Rehman were also among other dignitaries who spoke at the occasion paying rich tributes to Ema Kombi.
