57th Wildlife Week at Manipur Zoological Garden, Iroishemba

The 57th Wildlife Week was celebrated today at Manipur Zoological Garden, Iroishemba under the aegis of Forest Department, Government of Manipur.
Addressing the function as chief guest, PHE Minister I Hemochandra called upon every citizen to plant a tree every time a child is born so that the message of preserving and promoting wildlife and environment reaches every nook and cranny of the State.
Noting that environment has degraded to an alarming level, Hemochandra also pointed out the need to build dams, roads etc as required by the changing time.
Nevertheless, he highlighted the importance of striking a balance between developmental requirements and preservation of environment.
Hemochandra also noted the increasing pressure on environment and ecology due to ever-rising human population.

In addition to the need for adoption of effective water harvesting technology, there is an urgent need to protect and develop catchment areas, he added.
In his presidential address, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest AK Rana asserted that no amount of money can compensate for a forest destroyed due to over-exploitation by mankind.
Later, prizes were distributed to winners of wildlife photo competition, essay and painting competitions for students organised in connection with the Wildlife Week.
Laishram Shamungou of TSE won 5th position in the mammal category and 4th position in the bird category of the wildlife photo competition.
Three Forest Guards were also felicitated at the function for their dedication to duty.
This was followed by release of a survey report on the birds found in and around Loktak Lake.
