Imphal, May 26 2014:
Whereas a general body meeting of Mani-pur Pradesh Trinamool Cong- ress (MPTC) held today affir-med election of MLA Kh Joykisan as its president, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has recognised MPTC as a State party.
As such, MPTC is no longer a unit of All India Trinamool Congress.
In the aftermath of the par-ty's disappointing performan- ce in the just concluded Lok Sabha election, party leaders and functionaries convened a meeting on May 21 and agreed to elect Joykisan as the party's new president so as to revamp the party.
The first general body mee-ting of the reincarnated party was held today at Leonlee Memorial Community Hall, Thangmeiband Thingel Maru and it affirmed Joykisan at the party's president.
However, out of seven MLAs of the party, one three namely K Sarat, M Kunjo and Kh Joykisan attended the general body meeting.
Speaking at the meeting, Joykisan pledged that he would work in transparent manner in close coordination with all members so as to strengthen the party.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, MPTC general secretary (administration) Kh Tiken said that MPTC was given recognition as a State party before the Lok Sa-bha election by ECI.
It is no longer a unit of West Bengal AITC.
AITC being a regional par-ty, its symbol of grass and flower was used by MPTC in the Lok Sabha election.
Tiken said they did not think AITC would interfere but support MPTC's move to evolve itself as a State party.
Claiming that all the seven MLAs of the party are still together, Tiken said that lack of transparency and certain grey areas were responsible for the party's lacklustre performance in the Lok Sabha election.
Even as party president Kim Gangte was approached to convene a meeting of the party so as to discuss the party's dismal performance in the Lok Sabha election, the party president did not convene any meeting.
Subsequently, party legislators and functionaries held a meeting and elected Joykisan as the party's new president, Tiken said.
