In a case of its first kind in Manipur, a man and a woman voluntarily conducted HIV testing on themselves before getting married.
The bridegroom identified as Huidrom Joseph Singh s/o H Shyamkumar Singh and the bride Thiyam Deepa Devi (30) d/o Dr Th Suresh Singh, Director of Health Services, voluntarily tested their HIV status at Imphal Hospital and Research Centre which is a recognised Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre (ICTC)/Voluntary Confidential Counselling Centre (VCCTC) under Manipur State AIDS Control Society before tying the knot on May 7, 2008 and submitted the laboratory examination reports of the testing to the office of MACS on May 8, 2008 .
According to Project Director of Manipur AIDS Control Society (MACS) Dr Kh Pramodkumar Singh, this is the first instance where a couple before getting married voluntarily tested their HIV status.
As a motivation to other people, this instance of voluntary testing by young people before getting married should be highlighted, Dr Pramodkumar said.
