Imphal, November 22 2015:
Any attempt to assimilate smaller communities into large communities by force is always abominable, asserted MLA RK Anand.
He was speaking at the prize distribution function of a Mathematics competition held at Lairenjam Awang Leikai today under the aegis of the Chigonglei Makhong Ereibak Kanba Luplen Apunba (CHEKLA) .
He categorically stated that self-centric approach and attitude should be pushed to the back-foot in the larger interest of the plural society.
In addition to killing an Aimol for refusing to shed Aimol identity, there was another disturbing report about erecting a monolith in commemoration of the alleged affiliation of Aimol tribe to Naga family.
These incidents are detrimental to peaceful co-existence.
Rather they would only sow seeds of discord and turmoil, Anand said.
The majority communities cannot afford to remain silent on such sensitive issues.
All communities should stand united against attempts to forcibly assimilate smaller tribes/communities into larger communities.
The Government too should take up necessary precautionary measures, Anand added.
CHEKLA president Khoisnam Dhiren Meetei and Kodompokpi Zilla Parishad Member Loitongbam Surchandra were also seated on the dais as presidium members.
The Mathematics competition was held in the first week of November in two categories.
In the first category (Classes VII to VIII), Surjakanta Irengbam of CT Higher Secondary School, Oinam Premibai of Mangolnganbi Foundation School and Lairenjam Clinton of Heritage Convent School won the first three positions.
In the second category (Class V to VI), Laishram Fiastom of St Joseph's School and Naorem Bishan of Pinnacle Coaching Centre won first and second positions respectively.
While the third position was shared between Emarick Chanambam of CT Higher Secondary School and Regal Lairenjam of Regular English School.
