Manipur State Commission for Women chairperson Dr Ibetombi Devi has pledged to take all possible measures to address plight of the women and work for their betterment.
Interacting with mediapersons at her office chamber in DC (IW) office complex today, Dr Ibetombi conceded that the deprived and underprivileged ones are more prone to gender-based crimes.
Due to naivety on their rights coupled with financial constraints most victims seldom approach the Commission for relevant assistance, said the Chairperson while conveying that under the guidelines of National Commission for women, the victims are entitled to financial support and other assistance.
Moreover, the Commission shares useful and purposeful advises along with providing counselling service to the victim women, explained Dr Ibetombi who also informed that self-defence training programmes for women are being conducted with experts of Manipur Police to enable the womenfolk fend for themselves.
While solving any dispute or entertaining complaints, emphasis is on reconciliation and settling the issue at hand peacefully through mutual understanding or agreement unlike legal procedures under which weightage is on circumstantial evidences and intense deliberation, elaborated the Commission who also expressed discontentment over publishing 'objectionable comments' against the Commission in a local daily.
Terming the publication as one-sided and individual viewpoints, she called upon all concerned to refrain from any activity that could mislead the general public on the functioning of the Commission.
Referring to the newspaper publication, member secretary of the Commission S Meghachandra termed the report as unwarranted for the particular case is still pending at a court and therefore commenting on the issue amounts to sub-judice and attempt to influence the judgement before the actual decree.
He also informed that the report was about a domestic violence case filed by one Chingtham Deviya Devi d/o Ch Ibotombi Singh of Haobam marak Chingtham leikai, against her husband and in-laws of Haobam Marak Keisham Leikai.
Reaffirming that the Commission is committed to uphold rights of the women and their empowerment, Meghachandra prevailed upon the advocate concerned to exercise wisdom rather than crave for publicity for such one-sided perspective have the potential to distort the truth.
