Imphal, July 18 2020: CAF&PD and Revenue Minister Karam Shyam has stated that Lilakhong Maril will be made a picturesque spot closest to Manipur University within two or three years time.

The Minister made the statement during a tree plantation drive organised along the stretch of Lilakhong Maril (rivulet) which lies on the northern side of the Manipur University.

With a bid to set up parks on both sides of the Lilakhong Maril which is around 800 metre long, the cleaning of bed of the rivulet and earthwork on the banks has been started by spending around Rs 23 lakh, he said.

The flow of water along the stretch of the rivulet was almost restricted due to shallowing of its bed and overgrown vegetation, the Minister said while adding that there is no more restriction as the bed has now been cleaned and dug up by about 8 feet.

The rivulet, which bears historical significance, and its surrounding area has been a recreational spot to many since ages, he continued.

He also remarked that he has planted around 95 tree saplings earlier and is planning to plant around 100 saplings along the stretch this time.

Stone benches will be placed along the stretch to facilitate locals and MU community enjoy the natural beauty of the area, he said and further asserted that an open air gym and gardens will be developed at the spot so that it becomes an attractive spot.

"The State, amidst the COVID-19 outbreak, is witnessing a political turmoil and uncertainties.

It is better to focus on developmental and welfare activities rather than indulging in such political ruckus," he said.

He also said that it is high time for all elected representatives to focus on how to serve the people well and contribute and encourage in preserving natural environment.

All politicians have a big role in preservation and conservation of natural features such as hills, mountains, lakes, rivers and pastures, said the Minister and asserted that the State which is already filled with natural beauties would become more scenic and vibrant when politicians could invoke the importance of the same to others.
