Imphal, June 15 2013 :
Carrying out spot investigation into the alleged gunning down of a housewife by her own husband at a Senapati district village today, Manipur State Commission for Women chairperson Dr L Ibetombi Devi expressed serious concerned on the rising cases of violence against women.
Interacting with the victim's family members, relatives and locals, Dr Ibetombi advised that crime against women need to be effectively tackled jointly by women organisations and human rights advocates rather than living under the concept that the law will take its own course of action.
On June 12 at around 10.50 am 35-year old Lohra Cieila suffered fatal bullet wound on the left side of the forehead after her husband namely Pukeho Nedziine (45) shot her with a single barrel licence gun.
The accused husband, said to be a police personnel, reportedly shot her following an argument at their temporary house located close to Tadubi police station under Senapati district.
Cieila was an assistant teacher at Makhan Tabiwo Primary School.
Chowainamei Khunou is the native village of both the husband and wife.
After post mortem at JNIMS on June 13, Cieila's mortal remains was taken back to her native village the next day for the last rites.
Nepuni Drihrii, the victim's father, told Commission representatives that he heard the sad news while working in the fields and rushing to the couple's place found her daughter laying in a pool of blood.
He expressed that Pukeho be punished by the Government according to his guilt.
Noting increase in the rate of such undesired incidents in the State rendering many children motherless, Dr Ibetombi strongly recommended that Fast Track Courts be activated in the State to ensure befitting punishment against perpetrators of violent crimes.
Commenting on the incident, Commission member Hodam Piteshwori speculated as per circumstantial evidences Cieila's death might be intentional rather than accidental firing.
accompanied by SDPO (mao) and OC (Tadubi PS), the Commission delegates also spotted a bullet-riddled silver utensil in the kitchen and the bedroom laying in disarray clearly hinting at physical brawl preceding the shooting.
Cieila and Nedziine got married in 2007 with the mother leaving behind three children, including a six-month old baby boy.
In connection with the case, Tadubi police rounded up Pukeho Nedziine and him over to Lamphel police station, where the accused remains under police custody.
He is scheduled to appear before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Senapati on June 17 .
