Imphal, October 21 2020:
The All Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) has warned of a 48 hour inter-State bandh from October 26 over the stoic silence of the Government on the elections to the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) .
In a press meet held at ATSUM's office at Chingmeirong, the president of the student body, Seiboi Haokip stated that the Government should come out with a concrete stand about the conduct of the elections within four days.
If the Government fails to state their stand clearly within the deadline set, ATSUM and other like minded CSOs are all set to impose a 48 hour inter-State bandh and a complete ban on National projects from October 26, he said.
Warning of a more intense form of agitation if the State Government continues to sideline their demand, Seiboi also said that frontline warriors, media and other essential services will not be affected by the said bandh.
ATSUM has appealed to the State Government to not delay in conducting the ADC election repeatedly and HAC has also recommended the State Government for a timely election, he said while adding that the ball is now in the Government's court.
ATSUM will now no longer accept further extension of the terms of ADCs and neglecting the wishes of the tribals, he continued.
It may be noted that terms of the 6 ADCs had already expired in May this year but were extended for another 6 months by the State Cabinet on the recommendation of HAC.
