Imphal, February 19 2013:
A young girl of just 12 years who was raped and murdered in Dimapur yesterday has turned out to be a native of Manipur.
She was staying with her aunt near Lingrijan ground, Dimapur and was found murdered after being raped.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam has assured that the State Government would ask the Government of Nagaland to take up all necessary actions in connection with the inhuman criminal act.
On the other hand, several civil society organisations including UCM and the Chiru Union, North East India have condemned the brutal rape and murder in the strongest term.
The minor victim has been identified as KR Preety Chiru (12) d/o KR Janthoi Chiru of Waithou Chiru village.
Preety Chiru was the youngest of five siblings born to her parents.
Even as media persons and members of different civil organisations sought a meeting with Preety's aunt MS Chongrantal in order to collect a detailed account of the horrible crime, she refused to meet anybody saying that she was unwell.
Nonetheless, Preety Chiru's cousin (aunt's son) MS Singboi said that Preety Chiru studied up to class III at Emmanuel English School before moving to her MS Chongrantal's place at Dimapur Aokhol colony on January 8 this year.
There she was admitted in class IV in a school located at Dimapur Firing Range.
Chongrangtal and her husband MS Leba Chang have no issue and they have been living together with Preety Chiru.
Chongrangtal was informed about the brutal murder by someone through telephone at about 8.30 am
of February 18 .
On that fateful day (February 19), Preety Chiru woke up early in the morning and went out to freshen herself but she failed to come inside the house for a long time.
When her aunt went out in search of her, the minor girl was found murdered at Lingrijan ground near the Panchayat Hall, about 700 metres away from their house, Singboi said.
He said that Preety would have been killed by someone well acquainted with her because of the fear that the bestial act of raping the minor would become public if she is let off alive.
Along with registration of a case in connection with the murder at Dimapur police station, post mortem was also conducted there.
Mortal remains of the girl were brought to Imphal and last rites performed today.
On learning about the brutal murder, members of UCM, NIPCO, AMSU, UPF, Komrem Union, Chiru Students' Union and teachers and students of Emmanuel English School went to the bereaved family and extended their solidarity.
They also condemned the bestial crime in the strongest term.
Meanwhile, separate press releases issued by the All Manipur Women Voluntary Association and the Chiru Students' Union have condemned the murder and also urged both the Nagaland Government and the State Government to pull up the culprits and award them exemplary punishment.
