Imphal, June 11 2013:
A proposal to launch direct cash transfer system in Manipur has been forwarded to Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh.
This was stated by Chief Minister O Ibobi in response to a call attention motion raised by MLA I Ibohalbi.
Ibohalbi said that people have been facing a lot of inconveniences trying to open bank accounts for old age pension and other pension schemes.
Stating some families were found enjoying pensions even after the death of pensioners, Ibobi explained that the system of paying pension through bank accounts in order to avoid such fraudulent practices.
The new system enables the Government to know whether the pensioners are alive or dead.
As for those pensioners who have difficulties in opening bank accounts, Members of the House may help them, Ibobi suggested.
As SDO offices and security barracks large enough to accommodate 60 personnel would be constructed under Tribal Inclusive Growth Project in 27 blocks of hill districts, banks have been asked to open their branches at these blocks.
Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai said that out of 1,09,065 beneficiaries of Indira National Old Age Pension Scheme, Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme and Disability Pension Scheme, pension amounts for 60,074 have been transferred to their respective bank accounts.
On account of enlisting 12,000 additional pensioners by the State Government above the number fixed by the Centre during the previous Government, the State Government was unable to pay pension amounts in time for some period, Mirabai conceded.
