Imphal, Jul 10:
The Indian Govt is believed to have breached the extradition process in bringing back the four PLA cadres from Thailand to Manipur.
This came to light from a letter sent to the Executive Director of HRA Babloo Loitongbam by Ms Francesca Bombi of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
The letter mentions that the Thai authorities were in the process of deporting the four Indian asylum seekers and added that the deportation might have already taken place.
A copy of the letter handed out to the press by Babloo today said, "While there had been rumours to this effect over the past two days, we had not expected that this would take place so quickly, as in previous similar cases formal extradition proceedings have always been necessary before such a deportation could go ahead." Bombi also expressed surprise why this practice was not followed this time.
"UNHRC had earlier intervened and urged the Thailand Government not to deport the four PLA cadres pending the determination of their refugee claim but it seems that our intervention was not successful," said Bombi and added "we have also alerted Amnesty International and our office at Delhi on this case." Assuring that UNHRC will continue the determination process of the refugee status, Bombi hoped that HRA and other organisation will launch an advocacy campaign in India to ensure that the four are subjected to a fair trial.
"I know Amnesty International is involved in the case and I suggest that you contact them on the future course of action," the letter said.
