Imphal, July 21 2019:
The Manipur Democratic Alli-ance (MDA), a body formed by 9 political parties, has welcomed the State Cabinet decision to recommend the Central Government for declaring Manipur as a drought hit State.
Speaking to media persons at Shiv Sena Manipur office at Babupara today, MDA convenor M Tombi said that the decision taken during the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister N Biren Singh yesterday eve-ning is highly commend- able.
However, he said that simply recommending the Central Government to declare the State as drought hit will not be enough.
It will be of utmost importance for the leaders to do whatever they can for the people instead of keeping mum as more than 80 percent of the total agricultural lands of Manipur are currently unable to grow crops currently.
He further continued that the absence of 7 Ministers from yesterday's Cabinet meeting, including the Agriculture and Water Resource Minister, is immensely disappointing and a sad situation for the people of Manipur, especially the farmers.
Tombi opined that the current predicament faced by the State is due to human greed and destruction of nature and added that MDA will fully support every initiative taken up by the CM Biren led State Government to conserve forests as well as harvest rainwater.
Tombi also welcomed the Cabinet decision to implement various works regarding availability of drinking water at various parts of the State by taking soft loan from the New Development Bank.
However, he said that the current power struggle and political embroglio plaguing the State Government is a disappointment and an unfortunate development for the people of the State.
Stating that MDA is deeply concerned with the issue and will not remain a silent spectator, Tombi said that it is high time for the people and the CSOs to come together and pressure the administration and the political leaders to bring an end to the issue.
On the other hand, the convenor announced that a team of MDA will head to New Delhi for the second time to meet the President of the country and lay down pressure for giving assent to the Manipur People Bill 2018 .
MDA is yet to include BJP, NEIDP and Trinamool Congress, he informed.
