Imphal, March 16 2013 :
Sewerage and Capital Project affected residents of Thangmeiband Yumnam Leikai and Watham Leirak today staged sit-in-demonstration at Lilasing Khongnangkhong demanding expeditious completion of pending construction works.
During the protest galvanised by Thangmeiband Improvement Club (TIC) dilapidated condition of Watham Leirak, which was once an important link-road to Lamphelpat, and frequent inundation of Yumnam Leikai residential areas due to the newly constructed Assembly Complex blocking the drainage system were highlighted.
According to TIC secretary Elangbam Tomba, people of the two residential pockets have been enduring severe inconveniences as neither the sewerage project along Watham Leirak could be completed nor the drainage system developed to drain water from Yumnam Leikai areas.
While non-completion of the sewerage project resulted in completely blocking the road that passes through Watham Leirak forcing residents to take alternative by-lanes on a daily basis, absence of a viable drainage system is posing great threat to Yumnam Leikai residents who are certain to face severe inundation during rainy season, explained the secretary.

Location of the Assembly Complex is also creating inconveniences to the residents who are allowed to move out but restricted while returning home whenever assembly sessions are held, said Tomba while suggesting that Govt issue permits to the residents.
Moreover, restriction imposed on vehicular movement during assembly sessions mean that students have to cover long distances on foot to board their school buses/vans, he said.
Tomba further demanded that the Govt do not station security personnel atop residential buildings located around the assembly complex during sessions as female members of the family feel quite insecure.
Insisting that the Government take relevant measures, including black topping of Watham Leirak and develop drains at Yumnam Leikai, within March 20, he cautioned that the locals might be constrained to launch strong agitation in case there is lack of positive action.
