Imphal, September 11 2017:
The Committee of Civil Societies Kangleipak (CCSK) will commemorate the first sitting of the Manipur Assembly held on October 18, 1948 for the first time in the history of Manipur after the end of British colonial rule .
This was informed by CCSK general secretary Moirangthem Rakesh during a press meet held this afternoon at their Keishampat Leimajam Leikai office .
British colonial rulers left Manipur on August 14, 1947 and Manipur achieved independence .
After a Constitution was enacted, the first sitting of the elected representatives of Manipur was held on October 18, 1948, Rakesh said .
Given the significance of this day, CCSK would be holding a commemorative function for the second consecutive year .
After the controversial merger of Manipur into the Indian union in 1949, Manipur people have been studying only Indian history while overlooking their own history .
As a result, very few people know the history of Manipur and the history of Manipur is slowly fading into oblivion .
CCSK would be commemorating the first Assembly sitting with a view to inculcate some ideas about the history of Manipur and important landmark events in the minds of the younger generation, Rakesh said.
The commemorative function would be held under the banner 'Establishment of republic/people's rule in the history of Manipur' on October 18 at MFDC auditorium, Palace Compound .
An exhibition of historical photographs and documents would be organised as a part of the function .
Apart from publishing a souvenir, a poster campaign would also be launched ahead of the commemorative function, he said.
He then appealed to all the people to support and take part in the commemorative function.
