Angry locals of Kanglatongbi stormed Kanglatongbi Commando Outpost yesterday demanding punishment of personnel who allegedly fired a single round of bullet and thrashed two youths ostensibly for violating the curfew imposed due to COVID-19 .
According to a source, the incident happened last night at around 9.15 near Kanglatongbi Mandir when police personnel on duty detained two youths from Kanglatongbi Santipur area who were seen coming on the road defying the curfew imposed by the Government.
The commando personnel allegedly lathi charged, thrashed and kicked the two youths.
Unable to bear the pain of the beating, one of the two pushed one of the commando personnel and tried to run from the spot.
One of the commando personnel then allegedly fired a single round of bullet near the leg of the youth.
However, according to a police source, the two youths were detained for violating the curfew.
As the personnel lathi charged them, one of the youth allegedly punched a personnel and tried to flee from the spot.
Later, both of them were pulled up by the commando team and handed over to Sekmai Police Station.
Soon after the incident, angry locals stormed the commando outpost condemning the police high-handedness and brutality in enforcing the curfew.
They raised slogans and demanded befitting punishment to the commando personnel involved.
A team of Imphal West district police team then rushed to the spot.
The situation was brought under control when the two youths detained were released after imposing fines.
The commando personnel of Kanglatongbi Outpost have also been replaced by another commando team last night to appease the locals.
An enquiry into the incident will be conducted and proper action will be taken up against those found guilty, said police source.
