Themthing Ngasangva, IGP Zone 1, Manipur Police has appealed to the public who are in possession of stolen vehicles to surrender the said vehicles before the police at the earliest as possession of stolen vehicle is liable for punishment of three years imprisonment along with fine.
This was stated today by the IGP during a media briefing at SP Imphal West Conference hall in connection with the increasing number of vehicle thefts in different parts of the State and the measures taken up by the State Police by reconstituting anti vehicle theft cell.
The media briefing was also attended by IPS K Kabib, DIG, Range I and II, M Pradip, SP Imphal East and Ksh Shivkanta, SP Imphal West.
Briefing the media persons, Themthing Ngasangva stated that considering the increase in vehicle thefts, on March 29 DGP Manipur had ordered the reconstitution of the anti vehicle theft cell under the overall supervision of ADGP Law and Order and to be coordinated by all SPs of the State and DIGs and IGs.
The anti vehicle theft cell will operate with the objective to check vehicle theft cases and identification of vehicle theft gang members operating in the State including inter-State gangs and arresting of such gang members in coordination with the Motor Vehicle Department, the IGP said.
In the last few days, police were able to make some headway in reinvestigating previous cases of vehicle theft, he stated.
Some of the important vehicle theft gang members and cases detected recently include the case of Churachandpur police station as on March 15 where members of a vehicle theft gang were arrested from Molnon Torbung area along with one blue Activa.
The IGP further stated that on December 26 last year police received information that one Swift car was hit by an unknown red car at Ningthoukhong Project gate.
Later, the car which turned out to be a Honda City was found abandoned somewhere at Kwakta.
Following this, the Bishnupur Police team raided the house of V Somilien Vaiphei of Torbung based on specific information.
Some incriminating articles such as a set of vehicle keys, vehicle registration plate, seals having imprint of DTOs, IND plates, rapid gun, blank PVC cards were found but the accused is still at large, the IGP said.
Further, yesterday at around 12.30 pm one Honda Activa parked in front of CID Office at Babupara was stolen.
During investigation, it came to light that the stolen vehicle had met with an accident at Meitei Lamkhai with another vehicle on their way to Lilong.
Further inquiry revealed the vehicle thieves as Danish Khan, 19, s/o Abdul Karim of Lilong Mayai Leikai and Md Wajid Khan, 19, alias Muthi s/o Abdul Salma.
However, Md Wajid Khan is still at large, the IGP said.
Danish Khan also revealed that Wajid Khan was involved in different theft cases and added that a month or two back Wajid Khan had stolen a Honda Activa from JNIMS hospital, another Honda Activa from Oinam Dam Samurou in January, a Bullet motorcycle some three months back from Kwakeithel area and one more Honda Activa from Sajiwa Jail around 5 months ago.
IGP further stated that Danish Khan had confessed that the group operated in Imphal West and Imphal East and identified other gang members-Md Juber s/o Md Jaher Ali and Md Momocha alias Islao Rahaman alias Sharif, all from Lilong Haoreibi Mayai Leikai and the previously mentioned Md Wajid Khan.
He continued saying that Danish Khan was produced before the Court of CJM Imphal West today and remanded to six days police custody for further investigation.
The IGP also appealed to the public to park their vehicles only in the authorized parking area as notified by the authority concerned or in a secure parking operated area and also urged the operators to install security gadgets including CCTV cameras in the allotted parking space to prevent and deter any vehicle theft case.
He also warned the parking operators that responsibility will be fixed upon them if any vehicle is stolen from their parking area.
Lastly he urged people to secure their vehicles at home.
On the other hand, a team of Imphal West District Police anti vehicle theft cell assisted by Thoubal commandos recovered and seized three stolen vehicles from the house of Athokpam Rameshwor (34), 31 IRB personnel who is presently attached with Thoubal commando today.
Based on reliable information, the aforementioned team carried out a search operation at A Rameshwor's residence at Thoubal Athokpam Mayai Leikai this morning.
During this search operation, three stolen vehicles - 2 Alto oars and one Honda Activa were recovered.
A case has also been registered against A Rameshwor as per sources.
