Imphal, June 02:
A half-dam built near Wabagai Thong Ahanbi was inaugurated today by Chief Minister O Ibobi.
The half-dam was constructed by Minor Irrigation Department under the Accelerated Integrated Benefit Programme (AIBP) across Sekmai river at Wabagai Thingel Leikai.
Construction work of the half-dam began in January this year.
People of Wabagai were visibly gratified at the inauguration of the half-dam today which is 10.5 metres in height, 28 metres in length and 22 metres in breadth.
They were rejoicing on the thought that the half-dam would be able to provide water for domestic use and agriculture not only to the villages of Wabagai but also to those of Hiyanglam and Keirak.

Speaking at the inaugural function, the Chief Minister said that the half-dam would ameliorate the twin problem of shortage of water in summer and flash flood in rainy season.
Notwithstanding the fact that the people of Thoubal are very active in agricultural and allied activities, all the outlets of the wetlands located in Thoubal district such as Ikok Pat, Kharung Pat, Pumlen Pat, Khoidum Pat etc have been blocked up.
As such, these wetlands always get flooded in rainy season causing severe difficulties to the surrounding people.
Stating that this problem was there since the past many generations, the Chief Minister iterated that he too faced the same problem.
To remove these thick bio-mass choking water outlets of these wetlands, the Planning Commission has already sanctioned Rs 300 crores, he informed while assuring that cleansing work of the outlets will be taken up soon.
Today's inaugural function was also attended by Health Minister Ph Parijat and MLAs U Deben and E Dwijamani as presidium members.
Taking advantage of the visit, the Wabagai Development Committee submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister.
Addressing the gathering, Parijat announced that an urban health centre will be opened at Wabagai shortly.
