Imphal, August 28 2016:
On the occasion of the 85th death anniversary of Haipou Jadonang, the CorCom has offered revolutionary salute to all the martyrs and patriots who resisted and fought against British colonial rule.
August 29 is a red-letter day in the history of Manipur (Kangleipak).
It was on August 29, 1931 that Jadonang was hung to death by the British colonial rulers, reminded a statement issued by CorCom media coordinator Ksh Yoiheiba.
Jadonang was born to Thiudai Malangmei and Tabonliu at Kambiron, Tamenglong in 1905 .
After defeating Manipur in 1891, the British rulers brought Manipur under their total control although the administration of the hills and the valley were separated into two divisions.
The British rulers subjugated and exploited the people of Manipur to the extreme.
As Jadonang attained maturity, he realised the suppressive policies of the British colonial rulers as well as the secret agenda of Christian missionaries which were aimed at diluting the identity, culture, traditions of the Zeliangrong people.
Jadonang could not tolerate such injustices and he started challenging the colonial regime.
More and more people started supporting Jadonang and his movement was ultimately transformed into a mass movement for liberation of the colonised people.
Jadonang's movement for liberation of the oppressed turned out to be a serious headache to the British rulers and they started plotting to execute Jadonang on some fabricated charges.
The British rulers feared that Jadonang's ideas of freedom would spread all over Manipur and it would ignite a forceful and extensive liberation movement in Manipur in case Jadonang was allowed to live any longer.
Jadonang was arrested on February 19, 1928 from Binakandi, Cachar.
He was just 26 years old when he was hung to death on Nambul river bank behind Imphal Central Jail on August 29, 1931 at 6.30 am.
Even though the British colonial rule ended, Manipur fell under the alien rule of India.
Now the people of Manipur, irrespective of the hills and the valley, have been suffering from all kinds of repressive measures allegedly unleashed by the alien rule, it said.
CorCom then called upon all the people of both the hills and the valley to fight collectively against the alien rule and bring about an independent Manipur where all the communities can safeguard their identities.
It further conveyed solidarity to all the people of Manipur, particularly Zeliangrong community on the occasion of Haipou Jadonang's 85th death anniversary.
Unity among the masses and unification of smaller ethnic groups is the only weapon to fight against imperialism, it added.
