Many suggest more cops to regulate traffic movement

Imphal, August 23 2016: Pointing out that vehicular traffic is managed quite effectively with the help of police when VVIPs are moving on busy roads which indirectly eases movement of common people too, many citizens have suggested enrolment of police in addition to Traffic Control Police (TCP) for traffic management.

Commenting on the ongoing campaign of The Sangai Express on traffic management, one Renubala of Sangaiprou endorsed the observation of AIR Imphal news guest analysts that the roads of Imphal city are neither too narrow nor the traffic volumes too huge, and it requires some effective traffic management measures.

Extra traffic control measures are put in place by police and TCP personnel when VVIPs move on busy roads.

It would be quite beneficial if similar measures are put in place during peak hours irrespective of whether any VVIPs are travelling or not, Renubala said.

Traffic management would be much easier if police personnel seen standing on roads assist TCP.

Traffic congestion can also be reduced if the travellers stick to their respective lanes.

Although diesel autos have been blamed time and again for traffic congestion in Imphal city, they are the most convenient means of transport for people who do not drive their own vehicles.

Diesel autos can be regulated by strictly enforcing certain rules like speed limit in the vicinity of Khwairamband, sticking to left lanes without crossing to the right etc.

Many diesel auto drivers do not see their surroundings when they see passengers and this is a very dangerous habit, she remarked.

The median of Tiddim Road is relatively higher.

With people used to crossing the road at points closest to lanes leading to their respective localities, people driving along the road could not drive their vehicles at ease.

Women particularly are facing lots of inconveniences in climbing the high median on account of their dresses which usually happen to be phanek.

Given all these problems, there is a need to create more zebra crossings.

School students are taught traffic safety rules in theory but they have no practical lessons to learn on roads.

Although a yellow stripe has been painted on most school vans, many of them are seen resorting to rash driving in their effort to meet school hours.

A great many time, they were seen driving with the passenger doors open.

There is a need to check violation of such safety norms by school van drivers and also to restrict the number of children they carry in a single strip, Renubala added.

One Kabichandra of Pukhao Laipham said that TCP personnel deployed in front of GM Hall were seen engaging in unethical practices rather than managing traffic at the busy junction.

One Somorjit of Ningom Thongjao expressed serious concern on triple riding on two-wheelers by teenagers, violation of traffic rules and misuse of light (up and down angles) during night.
