Imphal, May 06 2011:
A State level workshop on 'Institutionalisation of sustainable management of natural forests: criteria and indicator approach' was held at the main conference hall of Forest Headquarters at Sanjenthong here today.
Organised jointly by Forest Department, Government of Manipur and Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM), Bhopal, Additional Chief Secretary in charge of Forest & and Environment, Govt of Manipur PC Lawmkunga, IAS inaugurated the day-long workshop as chief guest.
Speaking at the occasion, Lawmkunga observed that despite the efforts being made to protect forest areas and improve the environmental condition in Manipur for the last many years, no tangible result has been seen.
So, organising a State level workshop on the theme of 'Institutionalisation of sustainable management of natural forests : Criteria and indicator approach' to discuss this issue is very relevant and appreciative.
If nothing could have been achieved from the workshops and seminars conducted in the past, every possible measures should be made to utilise the benefit of this workshop, he exhorted.
Pointing out that degradation of Loktak lake and its environment day by day is a serious concern in Manipur, Lawmkunga said that it would be good on the part of the State Govt to ensure speedy progress in the ongoing work of cleaning up the Loktak lake.
Maintaining that environment and ecological protection should not be just entrusted to the staff of the department concerned, he also exhorted all the people to extend their support in the effort.
Public co-operation is also required in the protection of Keibul Lamjao National Park and its forest areas, he added.
Director of IIFM Bhopal Dr RB Lal presided over the function which was also attended by Principal Chief Conservator of Forest A Kharshiing, IFS as guest of honour.
In his presidential address, Dr RB Lala stressed on the need for mass awareness on institutionalisation of sustainable management of natural forests and suggested that this awareness can be imparted to the people either directly or indirectly.
People should also be encouraged to take part in discussion on how the ecosystem should be maintained because these very same people depend on the natural resources for their survival, he pointed.
In his address, Kharshiing observed that the Manipur has been blessed with natural resources and these resources should not be wasted.
Seeking the co-operation of the people, both in the hills and the valley, in the efforts being made by the Forest Department in ensuring ecological balance in Manipur, Kharshiing said that clearance of forest areas should be stopped at once.
Assistant Professor Dr Omprakash Madguni and other district level officials of Forest Department were also present at the workshop.
