Imphal, July 02 2015 :
The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has strongly opposed the move of the State Government to abolish the century old Bengali High School located at Babupara to facilitate the establishment of Ramkrishna Mission Centre.
Addressing media persons today at AMSU HQs, Imphal, HRD secretary of AMSU, N Kapilchandra stated that the students' body cannot accept the Government's order to abolish Bengali High School which was established in 1903 .
Such move of the Government is more like a threat to students of the school and to student community as a whole.
The move is a clear indication that the Government is capable of doing whatever it wants, he added.
The academic session of 2015 is on and the worst part is that an internal exam of the school is going on.
The Education (S) Department, Government of Manipur issued an order on June 29 for the abolition of Bengali Primary School (Classes I-V) and Bengali HS Classes VI-XI) .
The order said that school's students reading in class I to V should be transferred to Moirangkhom Junior High School, Moirangkhom and students reading in class VI to X should be transferred to Shymasakhi High School, Moirangkhom while the teaching and non-teaching staff of the schools should report to the Director of Education (S) for further deployment.
The Bengali High School has 103 students with 15 teachers.
Kapilchandra further stated that sentiments of the students should not be hurt by the Government's policy.
AMSU will not remain silent on the matter.
When AMSU enquired the Education (S) Department on the exact criteria for abolition of a full-fledged school, it was learnt that there is no definite criteria as of today and the department is still in the process of framing the criteria, he informed.
AMSU demanded that the Government should revoke the order at the earliest or the student body will start various forms of agitation if the Government fails to revoke the same.
He later urged the authorities concerned to frame a long term policy for development of Government schools in the State and also for the poor students.
He also demanded the Education Dept to frame a separate education policy for private educational institutes.
