Govt prioritising rainwater conservation: PHED Secy

The state government is in discussion for taking up of multiple initiatives for rainwater harvesting and conservation under the 'Catch the Rain' campaign, said PHED secretary N Kherda Verta.
Speaking prior to flagging off a bike rally to spread the message of 'Clean Water and Sanitation: Empowering Communities for Sustainable Development' organised by PHED, from Khuman Lampak to Senapati on Tuesday, Kherda Verta emphasised on the importance of judicious use of water keeping in view of the emerging trend of water scarcity in the state in the wake of climate change and other contributing factors like deforestation.
He also stressed on the need for afforestation and forest protection in order to lessen the impact of climate change.
PHED in associated with the planning department would be taking up several initiatives for rainwater harvesting in every household, especially in Imphal city and hill areas, where water scarcity hit the hardest.
It will help in addressing water scarcity to some extent, the secretary said.
The bike rally, which was flagged off from Khuman Lampak culminated at Taphou Ngaihang village in Senapati district.
The participants carried out poster campaign and awareness on water conservation along the way as well as the culmination spot.
The awareness programme at Taphou Ngaihang village was attended by DC (Senapati) Mahesh Chaudhari and PHED Senapati EE S Lohrii Mao.
A musical concert was also held there as part of the awareness programme.
