Ukhrul, April 22 2021:
Following the ransacking of the office of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) on April 16, Ukhrul Headman HA Sarimaya has today declared a state of "Khanganuk" (Emergency) to protect the inalienable territorial rights of Ukhrul.
The decision was taken after consulting all the constituent units/bodies of Hunphun/Ukhrul village Frontal Organizations at the Hanga Court Awungtang, Ukhrul.
The state of emergency came into effect on Tuesday, after the Headman declared the present situation at Ukhrul as not in 'a conducive atmosphere' .
The declaration of emergency is the immediate fallout of the April 16 incident when the outraged public of Ukhrul ransacked the office of TNL.
Despite imposition of section prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPc in Ukhrul town and opposition from the public of Ukhrul, the TNL went ahead and held its Assembly session.
The Village Council of Ukhrul had asserted that they had repeatedly urged TNL not to organize the assembly in Ukhrul town as TNL had already passed a Khangareng (ex-communication) order against Ukhrul/Hunphun.
The native people of Ukhrul must prepare to face any consequence in order to safeguard "our inherent land rights and must stay vigilant in all movements", maintained the Headman.
Once Khanganuk is declared, any get together programme or function that may disturb the law and order situation of the place is prohibited until normalcy returns.
It might be mentioned that entertainment, celebrations or any big event cannot be organized without prior information to the village authority.
In case of unavoidable circumstances, the individuals or groups concerned must inform in advance and obtain permission from the VAs of Hunphun/Ukhrul village at least a weak ahead and must abide by the guidelines and procedures for strict adherence during their programme or function.
It might be mentioned that on March 8, Hunphun/Ukhrul village had organized a solemn programme "Zungphun" the customary pledge to protect the integrity of the place.
This was further re-affirmed by a public endorsement on March 22 at Mission Ground Alungtang, Ukhrul.
Subsequently, on April 16 outraged people ransacked the TNL office complex.
