Holding the United Committee Manipur responsible for the stone pelting and provocative language used on January 16 night at Nagaram soon after the UCM torch rally, an emergency meeting of Nagaram villagers held on January 19 unanimously resolved to impose customary fine on the UCM.
Demanding compensation for loss of properties and disturbing the tranquility of the village, the resolution asked UCM to comply within January 31 failing which the village will take its on course of action, said the chairman of Nagaram Village and convenor of Tangkhul Avenue, Nagaram during a press briefing today.
The meeting also resented the State Government inaction to their demands for provision of security to provide protection in the area despite registering complaints with the Governor and Chief Minister on the incident.
While welcoming all democratic form of movements, the meeting vehemently opposed and condemned violence and intimidation that could affect harmony and peaceful co-existence of various communities in the State, "We neither oppose nor support the present movement as we have not been given enough time and chances to interact among the individuals and NGOs and official for the movement and as such, we remain as before," added the chairman and convenor.
Stressing on peaceful co-existence and mutual respect for each other, the chairman appealed to all concerned to refrain from biased criticism that could hurt the sentiments of other communities and create misunderstandings.
It also hailed media establishments for its role in bringing unity among the people and for making the people aware of the present volatile situation.
