Imphal, August 04 2014:
Workers of Manipur People's Party (MPP) today held a sit-in protest demanding imposition of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Manipur.
MPP also submitted a memorandum to the Governor pushing for implementation of ILP system in the state under Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulations 1873 .
Talking to pressmen on the sidelines of the demonstration, MPP president N Sovakiran said ILP was enforced in Manipur until it was scrapped back in 1950 by the Government of India.
He said now the people are craving for re-imposition of the system as there are growing concerns over possible disappearance of the indigenous people of the land.
Sovakiran mentioned that as per the Census Data of 2001, the total population of the Meiteis was counted as 7,51,822, the non-locals as 7,34,480, the second largest population next to the Meiteis, the tribal as 6,70,782 and the Meitei Pangal as 1,67,204 .
The unchecked growth in the non-Manipuri population possesses a serious threat to the Manipur-born population (indigenous) and hence no one can rule out disintegration of the state in near future, the MPP chief said.
He said MPP will take part in the proposed All Political Party meeting being convened by Manipur Government to discuss the ILP issue and pledged that his party will always join in the ongoing public movement demanding implementation of ILP system.
