Imphal, March 24 2023:
Raw water being pumped from Loktak lake by Loktak Lift Irrigation (LLI) through a canal is expected to reach Malom by tomorrow afternoon.
A high ranking official of the Water Resources Department informed that water being pumped from Ningthoukhong using the LLI is short of reaching Malom by just 1.5 Km.
The water reached Bamdiar today and it is expected to reach the Imphal low canal near Malom oil depot by tomorrow afternoon, said the official.
The canal through which water would be pumped from Ningthoukhong to Malom is about 18 Kms long.
The water pumped from Loktak would be filled in water tankers at Malom for distribution to the people of Imphal and greater Imphal areas who are currently facing acute water scarcity, said the official.
The water pumped from Ningthoukhong would have reached Malom earlier if not for the many bunds or embankments and small ponds made by local people along the course of the canal.
Earthen dams or bunds built inside the canal have been dismantled, said the official.
Water Resources Department would be distributing water pumped from Loktak for bathing, washing and other household purposes but not for drinking and cooking, said the official.
The same water can be used for drinking after boiling.
The water which reaches Malom first may be somewhat muddy but after some time, it would become clean and clear, the official added.
