Shillong, July 26 2014 :
In a kidnapping attempt that went horribly wrong, one policeman suffered multiple gunshot wounds while his friend is suspected to have been killed when they tried to flee the attempt.
According to sources, police officer Abhijit Mazumdar was on his way to Dalu and went to the Dobasipara bus stand to catch a bus where he met his friend Rana Chakraborty, a resident of Chaipani, Dalu.
The two then started their journey on the bike that Rana came in.
When they reached 7th Mile, they were stopped by 5 people with guns who came in a Maruti 800 car.
Upon being stopped, they were questioned about their profession and asked to get into the car.
Realizing what was happening, Mazumdar and his friend tried to run from the spot.
However, the kidnappers then fired at the two fleeing men.
While Mazumdar sustained bullet injuries to his back, he still managed to run into the nearby jungles.
However, his friend's body was later recovered by the West Garo Hills (WGH) police from the vicinity of the spot of the incident.
The critically injured Mazumdar has been brought to the Tura Civil Hospital for treatment.
The injured Mazumdar and the murdered Chakraborty were both about 28 years of age.
Chakraborty was pursuing his PhD in Tura while Mazumdar works in the Dalu Police Station.
No one has claimed responsibility for the killing, though all of the five kidnappers were heavily armed and are suspected to be militants.
The WGH Superintendent of Police (SP), Mukesh Singh confirmed the incident and said that an investigation into the incident is currently on.
