Council honours meritorious students

Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM) feted the position holders and meritorious students who secured higher marks in different subjects in the recently declared Class-XII examination at the auditorium of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy today.
Rs 5000 with gold medal, Rs 4000 and Rs 3000 with a citation each were awarded respectively to first, second and third position holders of all the three streams Arts, Science and Commerce.
Laishram Kiyamba Meetei of Enlighten Higher Secondary School, Sangakpham, CR Patricia Mary Hodge of TG Higher Secondary School, Imphal and Niang Thian Mawi of Dos Bosco Higher Secondary School, Churachandpur secured first, second and third position in the stream respectively.
In the Science stream, three students Aribam Bijoychandra Sharma of Temple of Learning, Canchipur, Kanghujam Sunindra Singh of Comet School, Changangei and Mohammad Aman Nawaz of Fancier Abhiram Higher Secondary School, Thoubal shared second position while Athokpam Langlen Chanu of HRD Academy, Ghari and Vilina Langonjam Of Herbert School, Changangei adjudged first and third positions respectively.
L Thibuni Chachei of Mt Everest College, Senapati, C Lalrinchhani of Rayburn College, Churachandpur and Yumnam Linthoi of TG Higher Secondary School, Imphal secured first, second and third positions respectively in the Commerce stream.
Moreover, cash prize of Rs 1000 and a citation each were also awarded to 4th to 20th position in Arts and Science streams and 4th and 5th position holders in Commerce stream.
Apart from Council prizes, prizes instituted by private individuals such as K Manikchand Memorial Cash Prize, Jashobanta Taorem Memorial Cash Award, RK Sanatombi Devi Integrated Trust Cash Awards, Loktongbam Nelis alias Joychand Singh Memorial Cash Award, Thokchom Birahari Singh Memorial Cash Award, Paite Literature Society Cash Award, Maisnam Megha Singh and Thagoi Devi Memorial Award, Pu Late Lalkhopao Singsit Memorial Award, Late Shri Thangjam Bahadur Memorial Award, N Amuyaima Singh Memorial Cash Award, Chongtham Ongbi Rajkumari Sanatombi Memorial Cash Award, Smt Pourillu Kameipui Memorial Merit Cash Award, Houreilung Kamei Memorial Merit Cash Award, Late Wangkheirakpam Gautam memorial Cash Award, Late Rozer Irom Memorial Cash Award and MAC Gold medal Award in Memory of Late Soraisham Ningthembi Singh were also given away in today's function.
Speaking at the occasion chief guest, Education Minister M Okendra reiterated his stand to bring about a change in the education system of the State within six months.
Informing the gathering that a website for Education Department would be launched within 4-5 days, the Minister urged the general public to post suggestions in the said website.
M Okendra also said that people of the State may also suggest the Department through letters as the Department is planning to open a Post Box at Post Office.
The Minister added that a concrete education policy would be formulated taking the suggestions of the general public into account.
Education Cells have been switched to Education Wing having 70 staff including Executive Engineers for construction of school buildings.
Government schools would be constructed under same design and painted with same colour, he added.
With an aim to attract students in Government schools, the Minister said, the Government is planning to give stipend to the Government school students who score higher marks.
Okendra also said that his Department is planning to put in effort to produce more position holders by Government schools than private schools.
He also mentioned about the need of appointment of regular Principals in Government colleges and formulation of a plan to support BPL students.
Urging the teachers not to bring in politics in education, the Minister also appealed the teachers to follow transfer policy.
Saying that the State Government is planning to make available of kerosene at Rs 16-17 to the general public, Okendra also urged the people of the State to suggest the Government on the ways to distribute PDS items properly.
He also said that home delivery of LPGs and system of opening of fuel stations till night would be introduced at the earliest in the State.
COHSEM Chairperson S Geeta Devi who presided over the function said that next year's Class-XII examination would be declared through grading system.
Giving his speech as guest of honour, Dean of School of Human and Environmental Sciences of Manipur University, Prof Nabakumar Singh said that parents and teachers must help the students in exploring their creative skills apart from gathering knowledge from books.
He also urged the Government to uplift collegiate education with bringing reforms in teaching style and introduction of new courses and subjects.
