Imphal, June 16 2012:
Capitalising on the advancement in science and technology, the Loktak Development Authority (LDA) is all set to employ Global Positioning System (GPS) to find out the exact area of Loktak, the biggest fresh water lake in North East India.
This was stated during an official meeting today by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi who is also the LDA Chairman.
The meeting was attended by MLAs elected from Bishnupur district, Revenue Commissioner, DC Bishnupur, Settlement Director and LDA officials.
When Loktak Lake was first declared as Ramsar site in 1990, its area was said to be 266 sq Kms.
However, it was reported that the area of Loktak Lake has shrunk to 236 sq Kms in the last 20 years.
This report prompted the Govt to measure its exact area anew.
After ascertaining the exact boundary of Loktak Lake by using GPS, poles indicating boundary of the lake would be erected.
This would be followed by re-acquisition of lost areas by Revenue Department, informed a source.
