One Havildar of the Assam Rifles was killed and another three seriously injured during a fierce encounter with well armed militants on the Indo-Myanmar border near border pillar number 83 north east of Moreh PS yesterday morning at around 10.30.According to reports received by the press, the encounter took place when UGs armed to the teeth attacked the 37th Assam Rilfes personnel with sophisticated weapons while they were patrolling near Pillar Number 83 on the Indo-Myanmar border.
In the ensuing encounter one Havildar was instantly killed and three other AR personnel injured.
The UGs are reported to have carried out the attack from the Myanmar side.
The deceased Havildar has been identified as one Narender Singh (army No 37700353) of Uttaranchal.
The victim's body was shifted to Lilong PHC for post mortem today.
AR authorities, who informed the incident to Moreh PS, said that it was very difficult to identify the outfit responsible for the ambush as the attack was carried from Myanmar side.
It may be noted here that 37th AR is presently based at Kwatha.
In another incident, State security forces arrested a suspected UG and recovered several arms and ammunition during a massive combing operation launched at Chanam Sandrok, Khendrok, Thiyam Konjin Phunal Maring and Arapati Muslim village of Imphal East this morning.
Talking to media persons at his office today, Imphal East SP Kh Chandramani informed that a joint security team consisting of Imphal East Commandos and personnel of I, II and III IRB personnel were pressed into action this morning at around 4 after receiving specific information that some well armed UGs were holed up in the said areas.
During the combing operation, a suspected UG was apprehended by the security personnel from Phunal Maring Village at around 9 am, added the SP.
The arrested youth has been identified as one Aheibam Baba alias Nanao alias Tony (23) of Heirangoithong Jaganath Achouba Leirak Aheibam Leikai.
According to information provided by A Baba during interrogation, one Lethod launcher Grenade Gun, one AK 56 rifle, two magazine, 14 live rounds of AK 56 rifle, one kenwood set and a pouch for carrying Lethod bomb were recovered from the house of one Takhellambam Iboton (70) of Chanam Sendrok Mamang Leikai.
One AK Rifle butt, 16 electronic detonator, six electronic fuse and one battery charger were also recovered from the residence of Mohori located at Chanam Sandrok while one Russian made binocular was also recovered from the house of Kangabam Roben (30) of Thiyam Konjin.
SP further informed that A Baba had joined a particular underground outfit in 1999 under the guidance of one Pari of Sekmaijin and is presently working as a member of the fighting group of Div IV unit II under one corporal Surjit alias Thenbung of Chanam Sandrok.
Meanwhile, unidentified persons placed a Chinese made hand grenade at the residence of Chandel SDO G Budha located at Uripok Gopalji Leirak this afternoon at around 1, said sources.
Sources said that unidentified persons left the bomb on chair which was lying in the courtyard before hurriedly leaving the house.
