Kakching, July 21 2021:
The Joint Non-Government Voluntary Organisation (JNGVO), Kakching said that frequent opening of gates of Sekmai (Shengmai) Barrage Dam at Keirak has severely lowered water level of Shengmai river thereby preventing every work related with water of the river including RLI schemes and farming.
JNGVO secretary publicity Romesh Naorem said in a statement that many farmers who are yet to sow paddy seeds are in a dilemma of whether or not to go ahead with paddy plantation due to lack of water as last week of July month approaches while farmers who have already sown seeds with the help of the Dam too would face problem in getting more water from the river as water level remains low.
Frequent opening of sluice gates of the Dam and subsequent lowering of water level of the Shengmai river have also caused problem in providing drinking water to localities in Kakching by water supply schemes sourced from the river, the statement said and appealed to those manning the Dam to think for people residing on the upstream of the Dam and maintain the water level of the river to a certain level by regulating the sluice gates.
The statement also appealed to authority concerned to understand interest of the people and gates of the Dam be opened for valid reason only.
