Imphal, August 02 2012:
As per the draft final report of the State Action Plan on Climate Change prepared by the Directorate of Environment as nodal agency to tackle the challenges of climate change, paddy productivity has declined in Manipur whereas wheat productivity is rising.
The report which has been submitted to the State Government focused on eight sectors and it would be forwarded to the Ministry of Environment and Forest after the same report is finalised by the State Government, informed a source.
The main sectors which have been identified by the report as thrust areas for tackling the challenges of climate change are agriculture, water, forest, energy, livelihood, health, urban planning and strategic knowledge.
Pointing out that wheat productivity has increased in the State at the cost of paddy, it suggested promotion of high yielding hybrid paddy varieties.
Observing that productivity of indigenous paddy species have declined too, it further recommended to promote cultivation of suitable crops instead of waiting for monsoon rain and sticking to paddy cultivation.
