PREPAK calls for elimination of violence against women

The proscribed People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) stated that step motherly judgment of governments has led to the increase in incidents of violence against women and since it affects Manipur's development in achieving its goals, the outfit along with the people will stand against such a threat.
Calling upon people from all walks of life to support the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, PREPAK recalled that sisters Patrea, Minerva and Maria Teresa, who overthrew Rafael Trujillo's fascist regime in Dominican Republic, were killed in a plotted car accident on November 25, 1960.The incident shocked the world and planted the seed of elimination of violence against women.
A statement signed by Assistant Secretary, Publicity and Propaganda, Leibak Ngakpa Luwang reminded that the 74 member states participated in the 17th meeting of the third committee of 54th Session of UN General Assembly on October 19, 1999 introduced to observe every November 25 as the international day for the elimination of violence against women.
The 83rd meeting of UN General Assembly held on December 17, 1999 resolved the final decision to observe the day against the violence against women.
Though India signed the UN's "Convention of all forms of discrimination against women" and established "Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005" which was implemented from October 16, 2006, the country has never committed in eliminating the violence against women, said the statement.
The rates of violence against women in Manipur are becoming equal comparing with India as the State has been fully paralyzed after annexing in 1949. More than 1600 incidents of violence against women have been reported in Manipur from 2005 to 2015 and number of rape incidents has been increased day by day.
In 2008, 38 numbers of rape incidents were reported in the State while 53, 63, 73 and 75 were reported in the years of 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 respectively.
However, in India a total of 21,467 number of rape incidents were reported in 2008 and 37,681 in 2014, said PREPAK.
The statement further said that a total number of 2434 persons were killed in Manipur from 2005 to November 21, 2015 under AFSPA.
A total of 2237 civilians were also killed by security forces from 1992 and 2014 while a number of 2910 underground cadres were killed at the same period.
Incidents of Rose, Manorama were the clear examples of violation of human rights by security forces in Manipur, said the statement.
