Meet highlights woes of workers

In connection with the month-long Hijam Irabot birth anniversary celebration, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Manipur organized a meeting cum sit-in-protest at Irabot Bhavan, BT Road on Friday during which certain demands were put up.
Demands which were put up during the protest included setting up of highway protection force; implementation of Inner Line Permit System to monitor influx of outsiders into the State; restoration of Imphal-Jiribam road at the earliest; fixation of monthly salary for workers at Rs 10, 000 and few others.
Speaking to newspersons, L Sotinkumar, general secretary of AITUC, Manipur pointed out that the decision taken to privatize certain government departments was not taken in the larger interest of the people as there is high possibility of discrimination of workers by owners of companies following the privatization process.
He said that VDF personnel, anganwadi helpers, ASHA workers and laborers should be given adequate monthly honorarium like anganwadi workers outside the State who are provided with a minimum monthly pay of Rs 8, 000 .
Prof Chinglen Meisnam, Department of Economics, Manipur University; Ksh Shanta, secretary of Trade Union Co-ordinating Body, Manipur; H Kullamani, general secretary of All Manipur Road Transport & Motor Workers' Union; A Nalini Devi, president of Manipur Anganwadi Workers' & Helpers' Union; Ksh Tama Devi, president of All Manipur Road Side Street Vendors' Welfare Association and Thoibi Devi, president of All Manipur ASHA Workers' Union also took part in today's protest demonstration.
