Ageing Minister Phungzathang ties knot with young bride

Imphal, January 15 2015:
In an unprecedented manner, Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Phungzathang Tonsing (77) tied knot with a neighboring woman aged around 23 years in a glittering marriage ceremony held at the residence of the Minister at New Lamka, Churachandpur Hebron Veng on Thursday.
The bride whom the Minister married is identified as Thangngaihsang (23) d/o T Khamzadou of Hebron Veng, New Lamka in Churachandpur district.
Presently, Thang-ngaihsang is working as a nurse under Department of Health, Government of Manipur.
The newly-wed couple has thrown a wedding reception ceremony to be held at the private residence of the Minister at Salem House, Paite Veng along Imphal Airport Road on January 16 .
Invitation cards have been sent to Chief Minister O Ibobi; Deputy CM Gaikhangam; Council of Ministers; MLAs and other high ranking government officials.
Minister Phungzathang was born on July 14, 1938 .
His first wife passed away in 2011 due to an illness.
There is a 40-year old married daughter and a son of the Minister.
It is said that a rift was created amongst the family members of the Minister two-three months back on hearing that the latter is going to be married again.
Family members of the Minister were left unhappy with the call.
Minister Phungzathang Tonsing is counted as the most successful politician amongst the Chin-Kuki-Mizo-Zoumi tribe in the State.
He was elected as a Member of Manipur District Council in 1972 after which he served as the Chairman of Churachandpur Assembly Council.
Later, he was elected as an MLA from Thanlong Assembly Constituency in Churachandpur district in 1980 contesting from the ticket of Indian National Congress (INC).
In 1984, Phungzathang Tonsing served as the Minister of Medical, Sports, Publicity and TSM.
He was again elected as an MLA from the Constituency in 1984 from the INC's ticket and was made the Minister of Health & Family Welfare.
Continuing his winning streak in 1990, he became the Minister of PHED and Tourism.
Phungzathang Tonsing had also served as the president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee in 1995 .
