Imphal, January 15 2015:
Ningol Yaipha Lamjing Apunba Kangleipak (NYLAK) organised a one-day seminar on prevention of crime against women at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace compound today.
Speaking at the seminar as a resource person, Women Action for Development (WAD) secretary Sobita Mangsatabam said that it is high time to thoroughly discuss the issue of crime against women in Manipur.
Saying that it is a matter of concern that the State has been witnessing a sharp rise in the rate of crime and violence against women in the past 15 years, Sobita said that it is unfortunate that the Government is not taking the matter seriously.
Stating that women and children are being protected by instituting separate policies for them in other countries, Sobita said that India does not have any gender and women policy so far.
Maintaining that there is need for discussing gender issues, she said that male and female members of the society must be given equal treatment.
Damdei Christian College Lecturer Priyadarshini Gangte said that high prevalence of crime against women and children is not a good sign.
Women would never be able to live with dignity if the male members of the society do not acknowledge the contribution of their female counterparts, she added.
NYLAK president Th Sobashini said that the seminar was organised in view of the increasing crime against women.
RRVFAM president Renu Takhellambam and senior journalist Chitra Ahanthem also spoke at the seminar.
