Need for Gender Policy to curb crime mooted

A day-long seminar on the topic 'How to Curb Crime Against Women' was organized by Ningol Yaipha Lamjing Apunba Kangleipak (NYLAK) at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound here on Thursday.
Addressing the gathering, Renu Takhellambam, president of EEVFAM, said that unabated incident of crime against women in different parts of the State is disturbing and it needs to be addressed promptly.
She expressed grave concern on the alarming rate of crime against women including rape and murder and noted that it is high time to find out the root causes of such crime to prevent.
Women should not be differentiated from men, she said, adding that it is the absolute right of women to live freely like men.
It should not be only in words that men and women are equal, she asserted.
Stating that women should be well informed of the men they chose for getting married as there have been instances where violence and crisis broke out between couples due to non-compatible, the president of EEVFAM underscored the need for establishment of a fast track court in the State to deliver quick justice to cases related to crime and violence against women.
While speaking as a resource person on the topic 'Gender Base Violence', Sobita Mangsatabam, secretary of Women Action for Development, maintained that enactment of Gender Policy would help in curbing crime and violence against women.
Stressing on the need for setting up of a separate directorate solely for gender to facilitate fight against crime against women, she pointed out that there is also the need to establish gender budget.
She urged the concerned authority to properly investigate cases of crime against women and subsequently file charge sheet against culprits without taking much time so as to will help in tackling the ever rising crime against women effectively.
Priyadarshini Gangte, lecturer in Damdei College, Motbung; Chitra Ahanthem, journalist and Th Sobashini, president of NYLAK also spoke in the seminar as resource persons.
