International Human Rights Day 2014 widely observed in Manipur

Like in other parts of the globe, the International Human Rights Day 2014 was observed by Centre for Human Rights & Duties Education, Manipur University at the Lecture Hall of the centre here today.
Th Chaoba, president of BJP Manipur Pradesh; Prof HNK Sarma, Vice-Chancellor of MU; Prof N Lokendra, Registrar of the university; Prof W Nabakumar, Department of Anthropology and Dr M Sureshkumar, Coordinator of Centre for Human Rights & Duties Education as chief guest, president and guests of honor respectively.
Dr Dhanabir Laishram, political scientist; RK Ranendrajit, editor of Freedom and Prof RK Hemakumar, Dean of Students' Welfare were also present on the occasion as special invitees.

Meanwhile, Manipur State Legal Services Authority also observed the Human Rights Day at Neerascent English School in Changangei Heigru Makhong at Imphal West district in which local meira-paibis, students and social workers took active part.
In the function that was held today, Ch Brajachand Singh, Member Secretary of the Authority along with Ch Ngouba Singh who is the Founder Secretary of the School and Social Worker, Ch Chandra Singh graced the function as Chief Guest, President and Guest of Honor respectively.
The Chief Guest in his statement expressed that the Authority has been imparting legal services relating to human rights particularly on the issues of women, children and the under-privileged, while adding that 'since our future lies in the hands of our children, they need to be aware of the concepts of human rights for the development of the society' .
He said that the National Human Rights Commission on the basis of the guidelines of the Supreme Court of India has innovated new strategies for the purpose of providing access to justice to a large number of people who have been denied the provision of human rights.
He also stressed the role of education to establish a Foundation for the protection of human rights, the release said.
The International Human Rights Day 2014 was also observed jointly by Women Action for Development (WAD) and several other organizations under the aegis of United NGOs Mission Manipur (UNMM) at Koirengei Uram Mapal Community Hall.
A rally was also taken out from the venue of the observance hall which was flagged off by retd Assistant Commander of BSF.
The rally passed through Koirengei Bazar and Old Airfield and ended at Koirengei Uram Mapal Community Hall where a public meeting was held.
Several placards which read such as 'Respect International Humanitarian Law & Geneva Convention', 'Protect women from crime & violence', 'Punish rapists and murderers' etc were used during the rally.
