Imphal, February 02 2013 :
Demanding the arrest of the culprits involved in the hit and run case that led to the death of M Awungshi Nganaongai by a VIP vehicle, a mass sit-in-protest demonstration was staged near Tangkhul Baptish Church here today.
Organised under the aegis of Tangkhul Katamnao Long, Imphal, (TKLI), the protest demonstration was attended by members of various social organisations including United Committee Manipur (UCM), All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), Democratic Students, Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Naga People's Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR), Naga Women's Union, Chandel (NWU) among others.
Talking to mediapersons on the sidelines of the protest demonstration, President of TKLI Pamreiso Raiping recalled that TKLI had earlier submitted a ultimatum to the Chief Minister on January 14 last giving 10 days' time for identifying the culprits for taking up necessary legal action against the recalcitrant driver and the VIP, who were in the speeding Scorpio jeep which mowed down Awungshi at North AOC in Imphal on December 18, 2012 .
However, even after a lapse of one month of the incident, the culprits are still at large and the police have not been able to identify or apprehend them, he lamented.
In the charter of demands put forward to the Chief Minister, TKLI had also pressed the giving an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh and a suitable Government job to the next of kin of the victim, who was the headmaster of Frontier High School, New Tusom in Ukhrul district.
After the sit-in-protest demonstration, a group of protesters also went to meet Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam to discuss the issue at the latter's office chamber.
However, Raiping maintained that the meeting with the Deputy Chief Minister was a waste.
Raiping informed that next course of action to be taken by TKLI would be decided after holding a meeting with representatives of various organizations in the evening.
