Imphal, September 29 2016:
The North East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) has strongly condemned the decision of Delhi University to make Hindi mandatory for all students of the varsity.
In a statement, NEFIS said that DU has been unsuccessfully trying to impose Hindi on all the students since the last many years and this time it was done without issuing any notification, catching the students unaware.
In 2013, DU had attempted to impose Hindi/MIL on DU students, but it had to withdraw the decision due to the strong campaign launched by NEFIS.
Stating that it does not make sense to impose Hindi on all the students, NEFIS said that making Hindi compulsory will cause immense hardships for students who belong to communities that do not speak Hindi.
Such a step is nothing but cultural chauvinism on the part of DU, said NEFIS and added that it is directed against students from North East because most of them are not familiar with Hindi.
Making Hindi compulsory will put the North East students under serious disadvantage, said NEFIS and added that it along with North East students will launch an intense agitation against the recent attempt by DU authority to make Hindi compulsory.
